Course Description

In the broader realm of the advancement of science and betterment of the human condition, there are several purported benefits for sharing clinical trial and research data. The scientific community and lay public can independently verify published results. The unavailability of original research data is known to be a significant barrier towards reproducibility. This session presents sharing, dissemination and analyses of data from clinical and molecular studies generated by government funded research consortia. We will discuss the reasons for data sharing and the issues surround ing it, the various ways sharing is implemented, and demonstrate data reuse, reproducibility and reanalysis of the types of clinical and mechanistic assay data in ImmPort, an immunology database and analysis portal.

In the field of immunology we are just beginning to explore repurposing public datasets to build our knowledge base, gain insight into new discoveries, and generate data-driven hypotheses that were not originally formulated in the studies. With increasing awareness of the importance of sharing research data and findings, however, comes the additional need to showcase how best to leverage shared datasets across research domains. Through this workshop we will showcase major efforts in the meta-analysis of open immunological data. Participants of the workshop will gain clear understanding of recent trends in conducting data-driven science.
